CA3162 (AD2020, C520D) is an integrated circuit, low cost, monolithic analog to digital converter, 3 digit multiplexed BCD output, availability of extended temperature range version, over range indication, maintains delay with hold inhibits conversion, high speed (96Hz) and low speed (4Hz) conversion rates, internal timing with no external clock required, differential input, capable of reading 99 mV below ground with single supply, ultra stable internal band gap voltage reference and dual slope A/D conversion.
CA3162 is still available from Renesas Electronics Corporation, the world's third-largest automotive chip supplier in 2026.
The circuits presented here in two versions are digital voltmeters panel indicators and have been designed by me in final version around 1996 with the combination of C520D and 74LS47 or CD4511 to build a complete 3-digit display (comune anode or comune cathode) using a binary coded decimal to 7-segment display/decoder. The combination of the two ICs offers a complete digital readout system with a minimum number of external parts. The first version with C520D was buit about 1987, and the second one with CA3182 was built after 1993.
Version 1 was used as an indicator for a power supply and version 2 has been included in a digital multimeter [3].
